Northern Cape – Profile – Naborn Construction
A diamond in the rough
Jana Engelbrecht
"Integrity and quality" – Owner of Naborn Construction, Jan Naborn, who
is from Kimberley, the capital of the Northern Cape, bases the company's
growing success on these two attributes.
Naborn Construction, celebrating its 80th year of existence this year and
40th year in Kimberley, was aptly awarded a Diamond Arrow Award by PMR.africa.
The Award was based on exceptional managerial and corporate governance qualities
displayed over the past 12 months, as well as Naborn Construction's
contribution to its respective sector.
"We are a family business and we plan to have a long and prosperous future
within Kimberley. There are many more planned projects in the pipeline," says
Naborn, as he proudly introduced the heir to his company, his son Maurits.
"We
are personally involved in every project that we take on and do not take on too
many projects at one time."
Quality
The advertising boards of Naborn Construction boast 'quality since 1928'
– the business was first started by Naborn's grandfather in 1928 in Holland.
His uncle moved to South Africa and started the business locally in 1946, after
which his father and Naborn followed suit.
"We built in the Orange Free State Gold Fields. Buildings erected by us
include shops, flats, schools, police stations, churches, etc," explains
Naborn.
The proudest monuments of Naborn in Kimberley include the Magistrate's
Court building, the 3SAI Army Base, the Transvaal Road Police Station, the
Municipal office block, Roodepan Housing Scheme and the former Provincial
Headquarters.
Other work includes the Tswalu Game Resort in the Kalahari and the Kayali
Game Lodge in Limpopo.
It is clear that Naborn and his son have a true passion for their
life-calling and plan to take their employees along for the ride to the top.
"Everyone
on our team is a winner. At the end of the day, our workers need to go home at
night and know that the company cares for them."
According to Naborn, there is a big shortage of skilled workmen in the
industry; he calls on Government to seriously tackle the problems that the
construction industry faces.
Responsibility
The company's social responsibility currently includes up-to-date
information regarding HIV/Aids for their employees, building playgrounds in
under-privileged areas, as well as involvement with church buildings for the San
community at Platfontein.
With no plans to go global, this Northern Cape master builder company is here
to stay.
