Research Survey Overview – Moçambique

Moçambique shakes off its past

PMR.africa has completed its annual survey on Moçambique. The purpose of the survey is:
  • to profile the Country of Moçambique as a growth point and potential investment area for foreign and local developers and investors;
  • to measure companies, institutions, government entities and individuals on their contribution to the economic growth and development of the province, management and corporate governance;
  • to measure companies, institutions and government entities’ competencies; and
  • to measure brand awareness.


The ratings are based on the perceptions of the respondents. 3 813 ratings and nominations were sourced.
 
Section 1: Respondents were asked to nominate and rate:

  • companies and institutions doing most in their respective sectors over the past 12 months to stimulate economic growth and development and also who have demonstrated exceptional managerial and corporate governance qualities during the same period;
  • the best ad campaigns;
  • the best agricultural projects;
  • the best shopping centres;
  • the best eco-tourism projects;
  • the most impressive new property development;
  • the most exciting/interesting heritage sites or historical buildings;
  • companies, institutions and NGOs doing most in the past 12 months to enhance tourism and conservation, fight HIV/Aids, fight crime, promote arts and culture, protect the environment;
  • companies, institutions and ministries doing most to enhance tourism and conservation;
  • companies and institutions they hold in high esteem as good corporate citizens, based on their corporate social responsibility initiatives and investments over the past 12 months;
  • the business persons they feel deserve special recognition for their outstanding service and contribution over the past 12 months.


Finalists are those companies who made the cut-off criteria of being rated by at least 12.5% of the sub-sample in each category (with a minimum of 3 ratings) and with a minimum overall rating of 3.40 out of 5.
 
Section 2: Respondents were asked to nominate and rate executive hotels, executive restaurants, golf courses, casinos and entertainment centres.
 
Finalists are the companies who made the cut-off criteria of being nominated and rated by at least 12.5% of the sub-sample in each category (with a minimum of 3 ratings) and with a minimum overall rating of 3.40 out of 5.
 
Section 3: Respondents were asked to nominate and rate:

  • the ministries doing most overall for prosperity and growth;
  • most effective in achieving their goals over the past 12 months, to accelerate service delivery;
  • to eradicate poverty;
  • and the most pro-active political figures.


All departments and individuals below met the cut-off criteria of being nominated and rated by at least 10% of the sub-sample and with a minimum overall rating of 3.40 out of 5.00.
 
Section 4: Respondents were asked to nominate and rate:

  • the most pro-active mayor, doing most for his/her city or town based on achievements over the past 12 months; and
  • cities and towns on doing most:
    • for social upliftment;
    • to attract foreign investment;
    • to attract local investment;
    • to attract tourism;
    • for job creation; and
    • to fight crime.


All cities and towns/individuals below met the cut-off criteria of being nominated and rated by at least 10% of the sub-sample.

Research Report

A country profile on Mozambique providing competitive insight of strategic value is available, featuring the ratings of all surveyed companies and institutions. The report is compiled as an executive summary with profiles and accompanying tables and graphs. The report interprets and ties together the various aspects of all the data sourced through the survey as detailed above. The report contains information on the country’s economic profile. How the survey was conducted

Universe: Large and medium-sized companies in Mozambique, and local and national government ministries. 
Timing: Interviews were conducted during November and December 2007, and January 2008. 
Sample: A random, national sample of respondents comprising of CEO ’s, MD ’s, business owners, company directors and managers, and senior national and local government officials. 
Methodology: Interviews were carried out telephonically utilising semi-structured questionnaires. Back-checks were conducted at all stages of the fieldwork, response coding, data capture and analysis. 100% of the total sample was checked on the respondents’ positions and the quality of the questionnaires.
