Research Survey Overview – Northern Cape

Northern Cape - striving for a better life

PMR.africa has completed its annual survey on the Northern Cape Province. The Northern Cape Province’s motto is "striving for a better life", translated to mean "strive for a better life". In keeping with this motto, the purpose of the survey is:

  1. to profile the Northern Cape as a growth point and potential investment area for foreign and local developers and investors; 
  2. to measure companies, institutions, government entities and individuals on their contribution to the economic growth and development of the province, management and corporate governance; 
  3. to measure companies, institutions and government entities’ competencies; and 
  4. to measure brand awareness.

The ratings are based on the perceptions of the respondents. 3 840 ratings and nominations were sourced.

Section 1: The respondents were asked to nominate and rate:

companies and institutions doing most in their respective sectors over the past 12 months to stimulate economic growth and development and also who have demonstrated exceptional managerial and corporate governance qualities during the same period; 

  • the best ad campaigns; 
  • the best agricultural projects; 
  • the best shopping centres; 
  • the best eco-tourism projects; 
  • the most impressive new property developments (built within the past 2 years); 
  • the most exciting/interesting heritage sites or historical buildings; 
  • the most effective South African Police Service (SAPS) stations; 
  • business persons they feel deserve special recognition for her/his outstanding service/contribution to business over the past 12 months; 
  • companies/institutions/NGOs doing most in the past 12 months to enhance BEE, enhance tourism and conservation, fight HIV/Aids, fight crime, promote the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (ASGISA), promote arts and culture, promote the production and manufacturing of local goods/products; protect the environment and promote and enhance South Africa’s readiness to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup; and 
  • companies/institutions they hold in high esteem as good corporate citizens, based on their corporate social responsibility initiatives and investments over the past 12 months.


Finalists are those companies who made the cut-off criteria of being rated by at least 10% of the sub-sample in each category (with a minimum of 3 ratings) and with a minimum overall rating of 3.40 out of 5.

Section 2: The respondents were asked to nominate and rate their most preferred executive lodges, executive hotels, executive restaurants, golf courses, casinos and entertainment centres.

Finalists are the companies who made the cut-off criteria of being rated by at least 10% of the sub-sample in each category (with a minimum of 3 ratings) and with a minimum overall rating of 3.40 out of 5.

Section 3: Respondents were asked to nominate and rate the most pro-active political figures during the past 12 months as well as the Provincial Government Departments doing most:

  • for prosperity and growth, in achieving its goals over the past 12 months, 
  • to accelerate service delivery, and 
  • to eradicate poverty.


All departments and individuals below met the cut-off criteria of being nominated by at least 10% of the sub-sample and with a minimum overall rating of 3.40 out of 5.00.

Section 4: Respondents were asked to nominate and rate the mayors doing most for her/his city or town based on achievements over the past 12 months, as well as cities and towns on doing most:

  • for social upliftment; 
  • to attract foreign investment; 
  • to attract local investment; 
  • to attract tourism; 
  • for job creation; 
  • and to fight crime.


All cities and towns/individuals below met the cut-off criteria of being nominated by at least 10% of the sub-sample.

A Northern Cape Provincial profile providing competitive insight of strategic value is available, featuring the ratings of all surveyed companies and institutions. This report is compiled as an executive summary with profiles and accompanying tables and graphs. The report interprets and ties together the various aspects of all the data sourced through the survey as detailed above. The report contains information on the province’s economic profile. How the survey was conducted

Universe: Large and medium-sized companies in the Northern Cape Province and Provincial and local Government Departments. 
Timing: Interviews were conducted during November and December 2007, and January 2008. 
Sample: Random, provincial sample comprising of CEOs, MDs, business owners, company directors and senior Provincial and Local government officials. 
Methodology: Interviews were carried out telephonically utilising semi-structured questionnaires. Back-checks were conducted at all stages of the fieldwork, response coding, data capture and analysis. 100% of the total sample was checked on the respondents’ positions and the quality of the questionnaires.
