Provinces & Countries – Free State Update
Women taking the lead in tourism
Tourism is burgeoning with opportunities in the Free State. A group of women in the Province decided to establish Free State Women in Tourism (FSWIT), consisting of 45 businesswomen, with a forum in Motheo, Xhariep, Lejweleputswa, Thabo Mofutsanyana and Fezile Dabi districts. These forums cover various sectors of the tourism industry with special focus on arts and crafts.
This enterprise is organised into an overarching provincial structure which renders support to the district structures, acts as a linkage to the Provincial Government, manages the provincial affairs of FSWIT and directs national and international marketing of tourism products of its members.
Services and products can be categorised under the following:
- Tour packages: sports, entertainment, educational, shebeen, city and township tours, hiking, cave route and mountain climbing tours, accommodation and catering.
- Accommodation: B&B’s, guesthouses, homestays and lodges.
- Consulting: mentoring and business advisory services, skills development facilitation, business strategy and planning, business plan development.
- Tourism training: in-house training courses for accommodation establishments, day-to-day running of accommodation, customer care, staff training, management of tourism products and marketing.
- Arranging of tourism events: festivals (tourism, cultural and jazz), exhibition stands, arts and culture exhibitions and conferencing.
Monthly business workshops will also be hosted to share business ideas, provide updates and statistics on the market and to motivate product owners and assist them with relevant day-to-day business activities.
Such initiatives will enhance and strengthen the tourism industry and, in so doing contribute to broadening the economic spectrum in the Province.
