Provinces & Countries – Western Cape Update

SA citizens may require UK visas

The Cape Town Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry is concerned about a British plan that would require all South Africans travelling to the UK to obtain visas to enter that country.

Dr Gerald Wolman, President of the Chamber, said the visa requirement would cause delays and add to the cost of doing business with the UK, one of South Africa’s leading trade partners.

"We understand that the UK Government has a real problem with fraudulently issued South African passports, but it would be a great pity if the remedy made it difficult for business travellers and tourists to visit Britain. We urge the UK Government to think carefully before introducing visas but, if they have to do so, speedy processing of applications is essential if damage is to be limited."

In the case of business travellers, Dr Wolman appealed for visas of up to 10 years to reduce problems and keep delays to an absolute minimum. He also urged nominal charges to ensure that tourism was not adversely affected.

On the question of visas for British visitors to South Africa, he said this would not be wise as South Africa did not have a problem with British passports – and anything which could negatively affect the local tourist industry and trade relations should be avoided.
