Research Survey Overview – Islamic Business Community In South Africa
Islamic business – a growing force to be reckoned with
PMR.africa has completed a national survey assessing the Islamic Business Community in South Africa.
The purpose of the survey is:
- to acknowledge the Islamic Business Community in South Africa for contributing to and developing the Country and the economy on various levels;
- to profile the Islamic Business Community as potential investment partners for foreign and local investors;
- to measure businesses’ and institutions’ competencies; and
- to measure brand awareness.
The ratings are based on the perceptions of the respondents. 918 ratings and nominations were sourced.
Section 1: The respondents were asked to nominate and rate:
- Islamic companies and institutions doing most in their respective sectors over the past 12 months to stimulate economic growth and development and also which have demonstrated exceptional managerial and corporate governance qualities during the same period.
Finalists are those companies which made the cut-off criteria of being rated by at least 12,5% of the sub-sample in each sector or category (with a minimum of 3 ratings) and with a minimum overall rating of 3.40 out of 5.00.
Section 2: The respondents were asked to nominate and rate:
- social responsibility initiatives.

- leisure and lifestyle institutions.

How the survey was conducted
Universe: Islamic Business Community in South Africa.
Timing: Interviews were conducted during July and August 2008.
Sample: A random, national sample comprising of business owners, MD’s CEO ’s, company directors and community leaders representing the Muslim community in South Africa. Methodology: Interviews were carried out telephonically utilising semi-structured questionnaires. Back-checks were conducted at all stages of the fieldwork, data capture and analysis stages. The questionnaires were checked for input quality and completeness prior to data capture. |
