New Hilux: durable - economical - comfortable -
affordable!
The
new Hilux from Toyota is an all new model from Toyota, a
derivative of the IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose
Vehicle) project which has taken total model production outside
of Japan for the first time in Toyota Motor Corporation's
history. Under this project Toyota South Africa truly come of
age as a large volume export vehicle manufacturer as one of the
four global manufacturing bases for the IMV. The new Hilux comes
to South Africa just eight months after the start of production
in Thailand, the major source plant for the IMV project.
For the South African market Toyota has tailored a 15 model
range, one less than the previous Hilux, to cater for the widest
spectrum of customer needs. Throughout the range there is a
focus on the key IMV design requirements of durability, economy
of operation, comfort, and affordability.
Three specification levels cater for the basic utility market
(base), a mid-range added comfort level (SRX) and a luxury
specification (Raider). To this is added a choice of either
petrol or diesel engines - all engines are new generation
designs for the new Hilux - in a range of 2,0; 2,7; and 4,0
litre petrol engines and 2,5 and 3,0 litre diesel engines.
Then there is the choice of either Single Cab or Double Cab and
4X2 or 4X4 drive and Raised Body. An all new addition is an
automatic transmission option on the top of the range Raider 4.0
V6 model.
Single Cab
In the new Hilux Single Cab line-up, a range that has as its
major market fleet and utility users, buyers have the widest
choice of models with nine derivatives available. In this range
the petrol engine choice is between a 2,0 litre four-cylinder
unit that develops 100kW and 182Nm of torque, or 2,7 litre four
cylinder with maximum power of 118kW and 241Nm of torque. Both
are new generation 16-valve VVT-i engines designed to optimise
power and economy.
Those that favour diesel power have a choice of either the 2,5
litre D-4D engine or the 3,0 litre D-4D unit. Both are latest
generation aluminium cylinder head, turbo charged common rail
direct injection engines.
The 2,5 litre engine has two specification levels. Maximum power
for both units is 75kW with torque for the normal specification
engine rated at 200Nm. The 4X4 and Raised Body models are fitted
with a Hi-spec version of this engine with torque of 260Nm. The
3,0 litre D-4D engine produces 120kW and torque of 343Nm and
features a variable vane turbocharger and intercooler.
